I just purchased a treadmill motor to upgrade my lathe. The motor is 230v 1.75hp DC continuous duty. I don't have a controller for it yet. At this point I'd like to ask you guys if you know a good controller that I can use with.
Thanks,
Suat

There are KB DC motor controllers both SCR bridge or PWM, PWM being the superior one.

Thanks Al. I've been reading KB item manuals, I think this one is what I need (can't be totally sure though):

One other question, how do I do the reversing if I use this controller?
You will need a reversing contactor on the motor leads, you will also need to close the Inhibit terminals so that the drive is reset and comes up in acceleration, do not reverse without this when the motor is running at the time.

Ah I see. I thought the controller do the reversing.
Thanks for your help.
Actually I'm not reading very good things about treadmill motors used in cnc machines as they don't last long etc. I'd like to use an AC 3 phase motor but the available room for motor in my lathe seem to be small to put a 700w and more.
The Johnson line of T.M. motors are pretty good quality.

Hi again. I bought a KB PWM controller but I need to ask about the HP resistor plug-in that the controller needs to run. Is that HP resistor unique and something that KB manufactured or is it just a resistor (electrical component) with the correct OHM value?
I'm asking because the KB branded resistor I need is 0.1 OHM #9838 P/N item and is cheap however the shipping cost from US to TR is way too high (cheapest on ebay is about $20). So if it's just a resistor then better I get it from locals.
You can use any make of resistor of the correct value and wattage.
Just that it comes with pins to plug it in.

Awesome. Thanks Al.
Might be easier to do it with a SPST switch and use a relay, the switch that KB uses and comes with the enclosure models have a terminal for the braking resistor and the I1 & I2 terminals, it also has a special centre position stop that prevents you from going from FWD to REV in one motion.
If you need the switch if you have a KB or Baldor motor rep near you they should stock it.

Is it something Baldor/KB branded/manufactured? I couldn't find info about SPST on-off-on switches. The one I have is: IC158 6 AYAKLI ON-OFF-ON B
