Raster X or Y in roughing cut 3d project

    Hi all,
I'm doing a 3d roughing cut which will take several hours. Is it better (easier on the motors) to raster cut moving the heavy gantry back and forth using the slaved X,A motors with the Y motor doing the "next row" move or vice versa? When it comes to the finishing cut - is a 45° raster easier on the motors than rastering in either X or Y (as in the roughing cut?) Or am I overthinking the whole thing?
    Thanks. Scott

I have been using the X-axis to handle the constant back/forth for raster cuts. The single motor does get quite hot though. The excess heat has caused the pulley to pull back towards the motor on the shaft, causing the belt to ride the edge of the larger belt gear. this has happened on the X axis motor and one of the Y motors. Set screws had loctite and everything.

May I ask, as the original poster, why this posting was moved and to where? The question was posited to the designers of the CNCRP machine. Is this the wrong forum for such questions?
    Thanks. Scott

It seemed like a general type question. Didn't see a reference to a CNCRP. I can move it back if you wish.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I can re-work the question to include a reference to CNCRP if you prefer but, yes, may I ask you to move it back to the CNCRP sub-forum? As an aside, where did it get moved to? There may be replies to the original question.
    Thanks. Scott

Not a problem. Can move it back easily. I moved it into the regular DIY Router forum since it seemed like a general router machine question. Looks like someone beat me to it. ;-)

I'm re-asking my question about rastering technique as it applies to a CNCRP 4824. Does it matter whether two motors move the massive gantry or one moves the (comparatively) light Z-assembly with regard to efficiency, motor heating, etc.

It's usually more efficient to use a horizontal (waterline) roughing strategy, rather than rastering. When you do that, two motors are usually running at the same time. I don't think this changes depending on what machine you're using.

It shouldn't really make any difference.

I have been rastering in the X axis on my CRP4896. This means only one motor is responsible for the majority of movment. While the dual Y-axis motors lock the gantry on that line.
