Rotary laser engraving is now possible using Laserweb4/Smoothieware
The k40 laser barely fit my Harmonic Drive Rotary. Will have to build a smaller one for the laser.

Sweet!!

Received replacement parallel port, network and USB cards from eBay china. That fixed all three cnc controller PC's.
I narrowed down the X3 mill Z servo motor as having damaged encoder output. Using a oscilloscope, I found The complementary differential outputs were still good. I just unsoldered the A/B wires and moved them, easy fix.
Almost 2 months later, the Workshop is up and running again. All four cnc's plus laser are now working.
Testing out the new 32bit ARM LPC1768 port of grbl-lpc. It's much faster than atmega328 version.
https://github.com/gnea/grbl-LPC
It will run on Smoothieboard, Cohesion3d, MKS, re-ARM and others that use the lpc1768. I use the re-ARM in these videos.

Some laser fun. Drink coasters, map of Middle Earth. Laserweb4 and Smoothie sure makes the K40 a much easier and more reliable laser cutter.
Took a long time searching eBay but finally found three matching NSK ground ballscrews for my mill. 10mm pitch, 14mm diameter. $260 for all three. More than I wanted to pay but they are in fine condition. The ballscrews are longer than needed so will have to be cut down to size. My summer project....
Most recent item I made. 3d printed rotary for the laser.

Testing linear axis speed for a large format CO2 laser build. Speed is more than fast enough for a laser. I don’t expect to need more than 500mm/sec for most laser cutting or raster. Pretty good for a small nema17 stepper.
With acceleration/deceleration, the average speed in the video is about 1600mm/sec or 3800in/min.
1000mm length move
2000mm/sec velocity
20,000 mm/sec^2 acceleration
THK HSR15 Linear Rail 1200mm length mounted on OpenBuild 20x40 vslot extrusion
Nema17 Stepper 1.7amp 76oz-in
GT2 20 tooth 2mm pitch belt
Cohesion3D board running Smoothieware
DM542 Stepper Driver at 45volts
8 microstep
Using THK AFC High Speed Grease.

Another rotary version I made. Lower profile for smaller K40 size cutters.
