Hi Folks.

I am putting together my Saturn I 4x4 machine. It came to
me in December of 2016, but I was delayed in completing it due
to family commitments.

I could use your help on how to install the NEMA 34 motor on
the top of the black vertical sliding router holder. The one I have is identical to
this photo:

Issues:

1. I hear the design was changed and I am guessing I need a spacer to lift the motor higher? Are these available from Fineline?
2. The shaft of the NEMA 34 motor has key in it, but I see no corresponding slot on the coupler for it key into. Is this something I need to change as well?
3. The plate at the top of the tower has four threaded small diameter holes for the machine bolts, but I don't have these bolts. Does anyone know the dimensions?

If anyone has photos or tips of this part of the install, I would be grateful to see them, as I am new at this. Thank you.

I realize this is an earlier model machine and I want to thank Nate for sending me the track spacers to upgrade the machine.

Nate if I need the spacer with longer bolts and the tiny bolts to attach the NEMA 34 motor to the mounting plate,
I would appreciate these being added to the additional new rack and pinion assembly I am going
to order from you when they are back in stock.

If the design has been altered so no spacer is needed and this can be retrofitted to a Saturn I
I would be interested in this option.

Are you referring to the X axis stepper?

I think he's talking about the Z axis motor. Mine also had a key that had to be removed to fit into the coupler. I don't recall what the thread was for the mounting bolts.

Sorry, I was unclear on the terminology.
Yes, it is the Z-Axis motor that mounts at the top and powers the ball screw that lifts the spindle up and down from the work surface.
I think I need the spacer, otherwise the shaft of the motor will not go all the way down and the
motor base plate will not mount flush.

I seem to have read that Nate came up with a spacer for this. If anyone knows about this or
about the correct four small mounting bolts for the mounting the NEMA motor, I would appreciate hearing
from you.

Micknm, so you just remove the key and slide the shaft into the coupling and tighten it up?
The coupling on the z-axis shaft will hold tight enough to the NEMA motor shaft and not slip
I assume? The key in the motor shaft had me looking for a corresponding slot on the coupler, but
there isn't one.

Yes, that's correct. None of the pulleys that we got were keyed. The Z axis coupler has not slipped. We did have repeated slippage on the Y slave pulley and had to reseat it several times, even though we used Locktite on it. We wound up changing the drives out to CNCRP drives and have had no problems.

Did you need to put a spacer in to raise the height of the NEMA motor to connect properly to the Z-Axis coupler?
If so, did you get the spacer from Fineline or make it yourself?

We have a taller Z-axis motor mount for the NEMA 34 size. I responded to your email with details and can send you one tomorrow.

David’s motor shafts were ridiculously long and required a larger spacer. I think a 1/4” extra space would work for your setup.
