    I think the basic Acorn software does not do threading. Not much good for a lathe.

    Incorrect. Centroid CNC Acorn has a built in encoder port for a real encoder. Acorn with the Pro license can do threading, Constant Surface Speed and rigid tapping on a lathe, and rigid tapping on a mill.
