    Low cost measurement of hardness?

Starting to work with some harder steels and thinking I should have a way to measure hardness. Doesn't need to be exact and in the range of Rockwell C of about 30 to 60. I see there are ball testers that put an indent in a flat surface and the size of the indent is measured. What am I looking at for a decent low cost one? Or is there a better way to go? I know some say use a file to see how well it cuts and that might be good enough after I get a little practice but was looking for the next step up from that.

There are hardness testing files sold in sets. The ones at MSC are around $150 for a set of 6. They start at RC40 and go to RC65 in 5 point steps.

These seem to have both increased in cost by quite a bit and become a rarer item. Neither KBC or Travers show them in a search.
