Center bracket is going to have to go. It will interfere with ball-screw bracket.
I don’t feel comfortable taking bracket out with out adding a bracket for support. I saw on another post where he put support on the outside of the column. I really liked that idea.
I’m not going to cut brace out of solid piece. There’s nothing square on casting so I going to weld pieces together.
You probably don't need the external support. The issue is that with the dovetail slides the weight of the head tries to pinch the 2 sides together. With linear guides that pinching force just isn't there.
I’m sure you are right but my gut feelings are that most of my machining will be done in this area and I don’t want that to be the weakest point of the column. But I’m not an engineer so I could be overly thinking this. And I would rather do it now versus later after it’s finished.

I’m going to mock up my table bearing mount to base bearing mount to see how ball screws are going to work.
I was going to weld plates together but they are too thick and I would have to put a lot of heat when welding. I’m trying to keep them as flat as possible.
Finished welding column brace. Don't know it will help but it's done.
After tack welding 2 plates together I bolted and put dowel pins in to keep from shifting.
Ordered some delrin rod to make caps for cap screws. They seem to work fine.

So am I seeing the Y axis as a belt drive behind the column?

Yes, I won’t have room in my enclosure for motor to mount straight out the back. Servo’s are 5000 rpm’s with 5mm ball screw so I need to gear them down.

I tested positive for Covid. So I’m am down for a while. My sons company decided to get rid of some I beams. I’ve been wanting to make a hoist for my mill so now I’m going to make an electric winch. Everything that goes on or used in my mill is just too darn heavy.

Similar to you, we have had something go through the house, but it tests negative to everything so I guess it is just in our imagination.
It felt more like flue than Covid. Gave it to my wife which made the war department happy. I’m feeling a lot better now so I can get back to working on mill. Thanks for your comments they’re greatly appreciated.
Got some paint on column. I’m going to use the larger servo on z axis's since it has lower rpm and a brake and I can direct couple it to eliminate gears and belt.
