So... is it common to join shorter pieces of rail (and if so, how is this done, what are the consequences etc), or is there suppliers that are affordable that will sell 2700mm long rail?
I should mention this is not for commercial use, I don't need uber accuracy especially since this will be for plasma.

You can join Two 1350mm Rails
Use dowel pins, shim stock, or a milled base for alignment.
Which will save you a lot of money than use single 2700mm rail.
