You will never look back when you go to parametric solids modelling. It's easier than 2D!
You can roll all of your 2D experience into the process.

Solid Edge has them all beat from my expierence with CAD systems.
If it ain't broke? Your not trying

CATIA V5 R17.
personally I prefer solidworks to the other CAD programmes, I can see everything in 3D before I machine it
cheers
I've just started looking at Alibre Design. Very promising, and free for personal use.
But I'm sure some of U are better qualified to test it than me...
east or west solid works is the best

I started off with pro-desktop back in high-school!
then moved onto pro engineer with its Grundy menu system!
now i use Solidworks and i find it extremely intuitive a great to use. roll on Solidworks 09!!
Solidworks for 9 years and still counting. I only use 2D stuff (DWGeditor which mimicks autocad) for opening and printing other peoples drawings.
I'd like to have a play with pro-E and the other high end packages. I also can't wait for solidworks to be written for linux computers.
GibbsCam - 10 years and loving it.
Generic CAD (2D only) '92 to '94
Ashlar Vellum (2D then 3D) '94 to '00
Ashlar Graphite (3D Wireframe) '00 to '05
Ashlar Cobalt (Solids, Surfaces & Wireframe) '05 to present
Extremely happy!
Gave my PC away in 1984 within 1 hour of using a Mac for the first time...
...have been in love ever since.
I think the Sun ( Old Sol ) may burn all its free hydrogen before that happens. SW has been in bed with M$ so long that making a successful port for Linux is a real nightmare for them. Besides, they (SW) don't forsee any money in offering a Linux version. Until they see a MAJORITY shift to Linux platforms for manufacturing software none of the major players will bother with linux.
I use SW2004 and have the 2005 upgrade (never found enough time to install it and figure out what got botched up.) I dropped the service contract at that point. I will make do with what I have and will likely be trying Synergy to see if that can keep me moving forward without requiring M$ warez.
I'm using for all my 2D drawings -> TURBOCAD
and my 3D works -> POV

I very impressed with Cimatron 8.5 The new, Germany made 5AX advanced aerospace module that used here, providing awesome possibilities for creating most complex toolpaths.
Alibre V9 works great, and its free. Unless your like me and buy the full expert version. I have and have used alot of different cad packages (2d and 3d). I still like Alibre the best. I need to upgrade to v11 still though.
