I'm sure this has been discussed before but I'm new and sure could use some direction. I've got a 2000 Haas Mini Mill and would like to connect it directly to a stand alone pc. Can I do this with the serial port?

Yes
On all equipment there are 2 levers...
Lever "A", and Lever F'in "B"
You'll need a cable with 3 wires, and some sort of comm software. Configure the software's comm settings to match those of the Haas (starts at setting 11, IIRC).
DB25 <-----------> DB9
1 <---- shield -- (no connection)
2 <---------------> 2
3 <---------------> 3
7 <---------------> 5
I found through this or some other thread the link to OneCNC.com. They have a nice FREE DNC program that works very well. On my control I have serial port A and serial port B for communication with a PC use Port A, B is for communicating with external devices other than your DNC PC
Good luck
