    Your thoughts on selling lathe

There is a very highly likelihood that we will have to move once again, and I've lost the heart to even think about tearing down and recreating another craft room for my wife an I (currently have done this 3 times in as many years... long story).

Anyway, I don't know if I should try to sell my lathe as a 98% complete CNC project, or if I should return the lathe to stock and then sell my conversion parts as a complete kit. I should be able to get at least $250-$300 for the lathe alone, since it's still virtually in unused condition (I would have to buy a couple replacement parts to replace ones that were modified for the conversion, should be around $50).

    Here is the conversion thread

Controller is a G540, and I've probably got around $600 into the conversion, not including the lathe of course.

What would be a reasonable price for a pretty much turn-key 7x10 conversion (keeping in mind that I didn't utilize ball screws).

What would be a reasonable price for the conversion "kit"?

    Thanks for any input!

    - Bill

It would be a shame for you to have to tear down your conversion to return the lathe to original condition. You had a lot of interesting ideas in your build thread. I particularly liked the X-axis motor mount. The G540 mount was interesting as well.

You might be able to get back pretty much all of the $$ outlay that you put in to it (but not the time, of course) if you can find the right buyer.

By comparison, a CNCFusion lathe upgrade kit sells for at least $550 (not counting the cost of a G540 or motors), although that kit has a Z ballscrew as well as some thrust bearings which your setup does not. I like your X-axis mounting better than theirs, though.

Fully-converted mini lathes carry a respectable price tag. I'm not sure what 98% complete means, though. I've seen your video of the axes being driven. Have you cut any metal on it? Is it just lacking spindle control, or is it missing something else?

Thanks for the thoughts and compliments, doorknob. Yeah, basically 98% means the Z axis limit switch is not wired up yet, although I could fix that pretty quickly. The spindle control is complete, but I have not been able to get it configured, so it's not proven.

Ballscrews/thrust bearings most definately add value & capabilities beyond my setup, and it seems that most, if not all people are looking for that in a conversion.

Fix the last issues and sell it working. You will never recover much in selling items not working. You might even choose to keep it.

Wen I was young, I spent most of my money on fast women, slow horses, and cheap booze. The rest of it I just wasted.

Jon, what's up buddy? Long time no chat. I dunno about selling it or not.... I'm leaning towards not at the moment, depending on what happens with our townhouse and if we have to move or not.

What have you been up to?

Unfortunately that just became less of an option, Justin. We are moving into a smaller place next month, so it's become more of a necessity that I sell it, else it will end up in storage (which still may happen if it doesn't fetch a decent price on craigslist).

Sold it yesterday to a guy who will actually put it to great use. He makes some sort of specialized air gun parts and was getting pretty tired of making them on his manual lathe. I'm hoping he will share some pics or vids of it in action.
