these come in a roll. there is not specific max length.

AMS makes the encoder. model 5311. they sell a $15 "sample" board with the reader chip. the chip itself is only $5 or so and they offer free samples if you want to make your own board. its got mounting holes o you can implement a little cnc'd plastic housing and mount. they only offer 300mm free sample magnetic tape, but its standard bogen tape which should only be $10-$20 or so per metre. i do not know of a source though that sells cut lengths.

the encoder can output a variety of signals, but most controls would take the ABI incremental.

Sounds good. I appreciate the information. I'll check it out and see what I can come up with. I have been wanting to try a double closed loop but have been balking at spending the money on glass scales. Sounds like a good way to implement it on the cheap.

    Thanks

Indeed. That might be the next step forward in CNC design at the home/hobby level. See
Two Feedback Loops are Better Than One | Archive content from Machine Design
    by Jacob Tal of Galil.

I am intrigued by the idea. Reality is that we would need a suitable driver. Galil make them I think, but afaik their pricing is not quite in the home/hobby arena - yet. Now, if someone could persuade the likes of Gecko ... For the moment, it is a bit of a Catch-22 situation though.

my maho is double loop. the drive regulates the speed, and the control sets the speed using the linear scale as feedback.

id like to apply this to steppers with the ams scales. a stepper has its own loop (although not truely closed) and the control can instead of steps send it a speed (a constant pulse stream). then use the scale feedback to manipulate the speed. should be cheap and easy to tune setup with precision and reliability....

thats what i hope anyway, haha.

I'm not really worried about a capable driver. I am running k-flop and snapamp which is capable of running double closed already. It can also run double closed with steppers or just steppers with scales. I would really like to see how much it improves accuracy. As is just about anything I cut is within 1-2 thou all day long with no special considerations. That's on a router with rack and pinion on x and y. It's a good test bed to see how much improvement is possible. If all goes well I may implement it on the vmc I'm getting ready to retrofit as well. It is already capable of holding well under a half thou so I'm not sure if I could really measure the improvement on that machine.

    Hi Ben

Better read the ASM fine print closely. In ABI incremental mode, a line width is 1.95 um, and there is a deliberate 2 line hysteresis in the output at reversal. That may cause some problems in the servo loop, unless the state-space algorithm can handle a deadband. Mind you, that is better than the 0.001" you mentioned, so maybe it will be OK.

No problem there it has a deadband setting. As for .001-2 that's in wood so it's a non issue really as far a accuracy is concerned.

Plenty of pics, and video please Russ! I'm still considering one myself.

Also, can you post pics of the shipping crate please mate? Seeing as size is directly proportional to delivery/import fee's it seems in OZ.

    cheers, Ian

awesome. pics or it didn't happen

By my count, that is now 1 SVM-0 and 2 SVM-2 delivered?

No I think that is number 3, mine and John’s arrived a few weeks ago, (I did post photo) and the total for the import charges was just under $2,000.00 (including the 10%GST)
I haven’t had time to run a program, I only powered it up last weekend, and only how got the chance to put some more photos up.
Yes it is a very nice machine, fast and smooth, once I get to run some code I will try and video it, that may be some time away unfortunaly.

Can't help saying the layout inside and the finish look nice, at least from this distance.

Wow! Defeng really didn't spare any expense or effort judging by the photos, you must be pretty damn chuffed now Liam! Try and get that at Hare and Forbes!

    Videos now mate!

Love those footmaster caster wheels. I told Defeng months ago that I found some nice machine feet, and send him the link. Nice to see that he puts them under his machines
Easy to level your machine by turning the red wheel, and when you need to move your machine you just turn all feet up so the machine stands on it's wheels.

Machine looks good, can't wait to see some video's of it.
Is that the BT30 spindle? What motor is powering it?

There's a US seller on Ebay that stocks a whole range of them in various specs for really good prices, I bought some a couple years back, I'll find the name.

On Aliexpress.com just search for footmaster and you will see them.
