I believe there is a hole in the side of the spindle like I did on mine but I haven't seen a pic to confirm.

I'm re-engineering my power drawbar now, it'll have most of the same features but much more compact.
This won't be a fantasy, I'll actually build a working unit to prove it works.
Maybe this one will be bright red, did enough in green already

the hole in the side is what my sieg kx1 had. they didnt make it deep enough and both it and the pin handle were soft, so it quickly became worn and finickey. still a good idea though when executed properly

yeah griz should have copied my spanner wrench, it works very well.

I always loved the look of the red Matsuura VMC's. Go for more red!

Yeah Bob, I've got some translucent red powdercoat and it'll go good with the green for Xmas.

This is the layout for my new power drawbar.
It's pretty similar the one I've built and been using for ages that works perfectly but much shorter as it's strictly for TTS
and is still the same scissor type that puts no strain on the spindle bearings.
Features a unique square air cylinder that will give over 1100 lbs @90 psi for the single stage version.
The 2 stage will provide well over 2200 lbs @90psi for absolute TTS holding force which is more than I have now.
Haven't had one bit of slippage with all the milling and testing I've done so far.
This will of course still work with the belt drives, provide easy access to the drawbar for adjustment or R8 tool swapping,
and be easily removed if needed.
The popularity of the TTS tools and the several knockoffs from other companies make this a very attractive tool holding system that provides everything the home machinist could want or need including the outfitting of an ATC.
Parts are ordered so I should have a gawdy red unit up and running around Xmas.

    Hoss,

Weird, I was literally sitting imagining how I would make a rectangular air cylinder for this purpose last night. How are you going to seal the piston to the bore? I concluded that using O-ring string would work so long as you radius the corners of the cylinder quite a bit.

PS - O/T but further to my earlier thread that you contributed to, got a ZX45 arriving on Monday! Welding the bench this weekend.

Yeah radiused corners a must, I already have a bag of o-rings but ordered a new cutter.

Congrats, looks like you got a nice Xmas present.

Slick, I was just looking at Starlepers design and figure it had to have a nice radius in the corners for a good seal.

Much better compact than that monster I have

    Thanks,
Doesn't really have to be compact, once everything is hidden behind the cover like the Tormach
    who's gonna know.

Stumbled across the prints I made last year for the professional grade drawbar and pullstud gripper
for the 30 taper holders I'd thought of using.
The gripper was 75% done before I got sidetracked.
This is what the present drawbar was designed in mind for.
It's why it has extra travel and the 1400-1500 lbs of pull recommended for 30 taper holders.
One thing that'll have to be modded though is to allow extra height for the tall stack of bellevilles needed to get the
travel necessary to release pullstud grippers.
I'll keep it just in case but TTS works so well it's probably gonna collect dust.

    Hoss,

I'm amazed at the quality of the drawings and designs that you continually come up with. You mentioned a couple of days ago that you really appreciated Bob's comments since he was an engineer. Well, let me tell you, I've known a few mechanical engineers in my time and you do as well as any of them. Way too many engineers are really glorified "project managers" and couldn't engineer their way out of a paper bag.

Your original powered drawbar seems to work perfectly, so I'm a little surprised you're trying to tweak it just to make it smaller. Does your work on a smaller powered drawbar mean you've finished up with the ATC and the limit switches? By the way, on the limit switches, I take it you're substituting two smaller optical switches per axis as compared to the one big honking optical switch per that International Hobbies used?

I see on your g0704.com website where you show a facemill as "must have" tooling, but you don't show any recommendations? Would one want to have both a facemill and a flycutter?

I see where you are using TTS tooling. I've been to the Tormach website, but I've been unable to find their TTS animation. Are there clone TTS holders? Would your "Hoss ATC" thread be the one to read to get up to speed on TTS? It seems like TTS tooling would be useful in manual machining even before I get the mill converted to CNC. I've had some CNC machining courses so I can really appreciate the quick-change and repeatable setting aspects of TTS.

    Thanks!
Yeah this power drawbar works perfectly but it was really intended for the 30 taper tool setup
so I decided to make one that's strictly for TTS.
Just by it's nature it'll be shorter but it doesn't have to be.
The weight difference is negligible, the Z motor isn't gonna notice a few less ounces.
Plus it gives me a chance to make different air cylinder.
The ATC is still in progress and I'm waiting on springs for the optical switch.
It uses just one optical per axis for both home and outer limits like I have now with the microswitches.
You can find 2-3 inch facemills at any of the places I link to for the other accessories.
I picked up a 2 inch indexable endmill with a 3/4 shank at CDCOtools.com to use with TTS that I'll use as a facemill.
    I already have a number of Kennametal R8 facemills, 1.5 - 3 inches.
Glacern has the real nice ones.
Novakon and Smithy are a couple places selling the knockoffs but they don't seem to have the new ATC style.
You can read all about TTS here.

Here, I found I had a copy of the TTS animation, they may not show this anymore.
Had to add the .zip extension for it to work here, just save it then delete that part of the filename to watch the gif.

Popped stiffer springs in the optical home/limit switch and now it works like it should.
