You can see how they did it in this pdf.
They use quite a small pulley to fit inside their cover.

For the time being, i have ordered a 14 tooth motor pulley and two leadscrew pulleys to test out, a 28 tooth and a 42 tooth so i will have the option to try a 2:1 and 3:1 reduction and see what works best. i am limited to using my existing electronics for now which is the G540 and 380oz/in motors. I plan on jumping up to the 570oz/in setup with kelling drivers and BOB in the future when the funds are available but wanted to at least be able to get it going to do some aluminum cnc machining for other projects i have going on right now.
parts are ordered.... McMaster Carr usually does quick work of getting things out so hopefully i will be able to get everything assembled up this weekend.
Thanks again Hoss!
Chris
Hay Hoss do you know if enebody is making a brass gear set for these mills. I just stripped out the gear part # 209. I am staying manuel for now but the plastic gears need to go.
No but if you can bore them you can get a pair of gears at qtcgears.
I did an rpm increase but if you browse you could find something close to stock if you want.

Speaking of gears, while doing the break in procedure for my mill today on step 2 the 1000RPM for 10 minutes i smelled an electrical burning smell and then quickly noticed that smoke was coming out of the top of the motor cover. i quickly shut it down but the smoke kept coming. after removing the cover the motor was the culprit, it was too hot to touch even. I spoke to Grizzly and they are going to have a technician call me.
the gear question is for Hoss, did you ever run the treadmill motor with the gearset? and if not, is it possible too? without having one of those motors to measure makes it tough.
also Hoss, does the treadmill motor use the grizzly motor controller still or did you have to run one of the treadmill motor controllers?
Thanks,
Chris
If enybody that has converted to belt drive has a gear # 209 thay would sell let me know. I talked to grizzly today and it is going to be 6 to 8 weakes for it to come in.
Chris,
The treadmill motors draw a lot of current, more than the stock motor so I'd recommend getting a kbmm-125 controller with one.

You'd have to baby it cause twice the power would strip the plastic gears easy.

Note: even if you plan to get a different motor, grizzly would owe you a free replacement, let them know.

Already contacted Grizzly, awaiting a "higher up" technical support specialist, the first fella wasn't comfortable so said he'd have another call me tomorrow.
I was looking at that motor you linked too, it looked like the ones in you videos but wasn't positive.
Also I finally found the thread post on page 155 i think with the motor comparison video. I have available plenty of 225V outlets, would you recommend using a KBMM-225 instead?
I want to replace the gears to steel pieces if i do this mod but i have not yet cracked open the case, i am guessing the hidden gear on the intermediate shaft is plastic as well?
Thanks again Hoss! Oh one last thing, are you controlling the motor via mach with the KBMM-125?
Thanks
Chris
If a 220 hookup is easier sure but there isn't much to gain as far as the motor is concerned.
I have my kbmm-125 actually outputting 126.5 volts and the motor is rated for 130 continuous.
You'll have to baby it cause of the plastic internal intermediate gear too.
Mach 3 control is easy with these boards. like I showed long ago.

I'll work on getting the PDB 2 prints and parts list for free download ready in a day or 2 as a New Years thanks.
Want to draw up a simpler version real quick that uses round bar for the legs and side supports if you
don't like the roman arch look I went for.

New Motor has been shipped from Grizzly, great customer service so far, very impressed!
Hoss I have both HD 20a 115v outlets throughout my shop and 220v outlets next to them, when I wired it i wanted to make sure i didn't regret anything, so far it has worked well. So i can wire either way neither one is harder then the other. I have a line on a nice KBM-225 with heatsink and terminal strip so i may go that route just because of the "current deal" no pun intended..haha.
anyways, thank you very much for your insights, i will go back and do some more reading around the section covering the KBMM hook up to mach3!
Chris
Hi Hoss,
Are you trying to design the PDB to still permit quill travel?
Nope, already did. Go back one page for the video.
Takes about 10 secs to yank the power drawbar off and you have full quill if you want now and again.
I'd still like to be able to use it as a drill press so that's one less tool I'd need cluttering my little room now.
I have to do some decluttering if I want to have room for a cnc lathe.

Free to a good home. Power Drawbar plans for the G0704.
Floating type that puts no strain on the bearings.
Can be quickly removed to allow full quill usage.
Easy access to the drawbar for tension adjustment or R8 tool swapping.
Can provide 1500-2000+ lbs pull on the TTS tools depending on your air cylinder and air pressure.
Alternate simple leg and side support design provided.
Parts list and supplier part #'s also included.
You provide the air cylinder of your choice.
Search for Fabco on Ebay for good deals.
This pdf will help with the part#'s for cylinders including multi-stages.

sure ill take it, no reason to attempt something already done and simplified for you lol. email sent.
Email sent Hoss, thank you very much for all you do here! I absolutely love this new PDB design. Very cool that you can remove it quickly to use the quill. Just what I need too so I can get rid of my little bench top drill press and free up some much needed space.
cheers,
Michael
