The isopropyl (rubbing, IPA) alcohol you buy at the super has as much as 30% water in it.
You can find >99% reagent or pharmaceutical grade isopropyl at your pharmacy or scientific supply.
I've never considered using alcohol for cleaning the sand. If I were, I'd probably switch silane instead and have done with the whole problem.
Hard to beat a cheap turkey roaster filled with sand at 400F for an hour.
Jack, ever thought of trying Acme nuts?

Acme nuts as turkey stuffing ?
Mmmm, lovely, but a tad unkind to the dentures.

It's like doing jigsaw puzzles in the dark.
Enjoy today's problems, for tomorrow's may be worse.
Found me a local supplier of crushed granite!
I've acid washed a batch of it and didn't see much bubbling as you would with sand... even the fines.
They sell a number of sizes however, the ones that seemed best were called "5/8 Chip", "5/8 to 1/4", and "1/2 and down (Fines)".
They were all stored close together and fines were blowing into the larger pieces... but hey they sell rock and gravel to landscapers. As washing is required this isn't a problem.
The only downside is they sell only by the cubic yard or approx. 2800 lbs! per aggregate. Where to put all that!
Upside... all three delivered to the house $280 or $170 if I pick it up.
you misunderstood me we wash our mixing gear with ipa i only suggested rubbing alchol cause i didnt think your'd get the real stuff yor granite dont look that bad
I may be labeled Benedict Arnold, but I have decided on a machine base of concrete.I maybe tared and feathered or epoxyed and stoned[granite stones]
but It makes sense to me.I am just eliminating a steel subframe or legs for the granite top.

Roach,
Do you guys actually wash your aggregate before using it?

Has anyone made any granite "plywood" using scraps of granite from a kitchen counter fabricator? I was thinking about that recently, as a local outfit invited people (in a Craigslist ad, no less) to dumpster-dive and carry off what they wanted from tons of cast-off pieces. Just a thought. Hate to see that stuff wasted.
The granite we get is stored outside on the ground and can have practacally anything from mud to compost on it. This make washing pretty mandatory, even for gravel and sand. The acid wash is just my way of making sure the limestone and ferric fines are removed.
Like grain alcohol, 99.5% IPA is readily available in the US (though it's produced differently than in Europe).
I'm curious if that's a big pile of granite to the east of your building. If so, why is it all spread out?
Oui Je suis francais de Nouveau Brunswick, living in Toronto. Many relatives in P'I
