ac servo. thats one of the things i plan on doing. trouble is the servos cost alot and often arent super fast. best deal ive seen is a teco 750w model from machmotion for $680ish with drive. thats 1hp from 3000 to 3750rpm. so 6000-7500rpm with a 2:1 pulley. probably a decent size for this mill keeping in mind that there is intermittent power up to 2hp for a minute or 2 and "oops" power to 3hp for several seconds (depends on cooling and other factors). this is also a small 80mm motor which will fit very easily under the cover on the grizzly mill and even the smaller wmd16v i got.

i think hoss has done this, so he can contradict me, but as my understanding goes: you set mach's spindle to step and direction, and put it on the same output pins as the C axis. m3 makes the spindle run continuously, c axis commands coordinate it for rigid tapping - which you have to write your own little program of course.

I just got one of these maybe a month ago. Not too bad. I probably only tap 75 to 100 holes per month that are larger than 6/32. It works great.
Not as cool, but on low production like what I do, perfectly acceptable.

so I am bumping this thread. I ordered my g0704 the beginning of February and it is finally being delivered this Thursday, July 15th. Go figure.

Is there a bolt-on power feed for the X?

    Thanks

Where do you live, timbuktu? They sure dragged their feet.

I posted some links here for some power feed sources.

    Grizzley Back Orders???

Hello... Anyone have any idea what's going on at Grizzley? I've been on back order since the first week of July... and they keep pushing the dates ahead and I can't seem to get a straight answer?... My order is for The G0704 Mill? Any infomation, Advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

The Business minded side of me says... "Man there is an amazing business opportunity here for someone that can actually supply this type mill."

    Patiently Dissapppointed

sounds like a thread mill would be the cheaper option then.

i think in many cases it would be yeah, but at some point the cost of worn out thread mills will eclipse the servo setup cost. depends how many holes you make.

hoss's attachment uses a stepper with a secondary belt to drive the spindle just for threading.

good point, and with a properly sized ratio, you could use a small stepper.

Just a little FYI, LakeShoreCarbide has great prices on thread mills. Compare them to MSC, Travers etc.. and you will see what I mean.

Wen I was young, I spent most of my money on fast women, slow horses, and cheap booze. The rest of it I just wasted.

I have a new BF20 and I was having problems with Y Tram issues. At first I thought it was my column as photomankc had (or still has?) issues with. But thanks to ihavenofish post back on page 27 I found the real problem.

-I found my Column was dead on square over 6" (sweet )

-But the spindle was tramming out to have 0.2mm difference on the Y axis...(Insert pounding head on desk and swearing)

** Answer for me was the access cover screws on the back of the head were ever so slightly keeping the head from sitting flat. Now I am <0.002 on my Y.

I learned allot about my Mill tonight just by troubleshooting this problem. When you learn the hard way you won't forget.

My column was not dead on, but may have been prior to me parting it out to take downstairs. Mine needed a little shim after that to get square. Only took a peice of foil to get it into square as it turned out. The head still nods a bit forward. I will have to check the access cover out next time and see if I have a similar issue. This winter I will probably go ahead and do machinechick's 3 bolt mod for the head when it's off to get it CNC'd. I think that will also help to be able to pull any nod it has out.

First is the belt-drive. I won't be able to really use the high RPMs till I replace the bearings but at the belt drive speeds low range would be about on par with what I do now and I get to cut out all the gear clatter and rattle I get in low gear now.
