Good luck with the internal intermediate plastic gear holding up.
That was one of the purposes for my belt drive, eliminating that time bomb.
My stock radials have been fine to over 7000 rpm but my mill has been comfortable in a 70 degree bedroom
not tortured running in subfreezing temps below recommended specs.

Well as long as the mill is still somewhat disassembled, thought I might as well
kill 4 birds with one stone before I put it back together.
    I'll be extending the Y travel to 9.25 - 9.5 inches.
The X already has enough travel and any extending would just be a flimsy waste of time.
I'll be mounting the Y motor in the rear.
I'll be adding a 5th axis to the head and gaining a couple more inches Z travel.
Oh yeah, then finishing the oiling system.
The fun with the lathe/4th axis will have to wait.
Details will follow when they are done.
Time to put the ZX45 to work.

Yeah, it isn't the long term plan since it won't let me get to the 7K RPMs I want anyway. Maybe when I replace the sleeve bearings I will do the quill belt drive conversion.

(nuts) Maybe I should move it into my living room. The X2 has similar bearings and I have used it for many years in the same environment.

  7. #1207
Maybe you should, similar isn't the same.

No, but similar is similar? It just isn't an option. It is where it is and thats where it will stay until I become rich.

Is there some particular reason you posted that video here in the first place instead of your thread?
If you don't like my suggestions, don't post here.

Don't get touchy. I was just showing an alternate setup - I see this as the most all encompassing thread. And it wasn't that I don't think your suggestion is good, it just isn't an option for me. Back to 'your' thread Hoss.

Waste not want not, the old Z axis belt drive parts will find a new home on the rear mounted Y axis.
Will be easier to fit in the enclosure.

Well that's easy, found the sketches I made May 2010 for the Y extension already, forget
sometimes that I draw these things up.

    Hoss,

Long time lurker here wants to thank you for all you have given to the group.
I have no idea how you find the time to get all this done but I am amazed at the pace you manage to keep developing new mods.
I have been debating on getting a G0704 because the Y travel is a bit to short for the project I have in mind without having to reposition the part so I am really looking forward to this new mod.

Neal, Judging from the time he is posting he must be getting help! 3:08am? Night owl would be an understatement! It is fun to see what he is up to next. I am waiting on a G0704 and his build as a few others have definitely fed the desire.
A lazy man does it twice.

yep, a nightowl, I'm usually up till 6-7 am before hitting the hay.
I drew up the prints last night (this morning I guess) so now I gotta go make some parts.
I'll be using the ZX45 to open up the base but it could be done with a drill and grinder if needed.
Nothing critical to do to it just get some cast iron out of the way.
Needs a longer ballscrew, I could use the one there now in the front but would only get about 8.5 inches of travel.
Needs a much different one to go in the rear.
    well, time for some breakfast.

Well after drawing up 4 different scenarios for extending the Y axis, particularly in mounting of the stepper,
I've settled on one that requires the least amount of mods to the base and column,
those would be the most difficult parts to rework.
Right now they just need a 1 inch clearance hole and the slot opened up.
Could very well be done with hand tools.
The precise bits are left for the bracketry which is much easier to handle and machine.
I'm doing a front stepper mount first since I can use a ballscrew from the X2 X axis to get it back up and running
and use the g0704 to make the parts for the rear mount.

    Here's more proof.
Since I've been off work and on pain meds, my hours are even more screwy.
Just came up from the basement with these parts.
The column spacer and the base with the slots opened up.
Went 1.25 more on each end.
The rear is 1.75 deep, was quicker to plunge out most of the material
then give it a couple go rounds to pretty it up.
I used my 1/2 inch drill to put in the 1 inch holes, should have set it up on the drill press.
    My finger is pretty sore.

Geez! Pretty sweet! After this mod what will your total travel be?
