It was brought up last week in other threads about drawbars and TTS with the G0704.
On the way home from work Friday, this idea came to me.
It seemed a simple and cheap solution for manual mills in my noggin
so I bodged it together and it works.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyaZGvcrCB0"]YouTube- G0704 Manual Auto Drawbar[/ame]

If I was going to keep the mill manual, I'd make a better crossbar that pivots,
would allow for drawbar removal, a tad more quill travel and keep the drawbar from rubbing.
It's for "Light Duty", well as "light" as my X2 can handle anyway. Read # 16
If you want to use stiffer bellevilles, you better bolt the machine down.
I could manage to compress the ones I used (left over from the X2)
with just forearm strength, about 750 lbs at the drawbar.
Works as quick and easy as the Mach 1 system but not as much $$$.
Should work just as well on X3's, RF45's or any other mill with a quill.
I was worried the quill handle might break but it seems more stout than I thought.
If I went with higher spring pressure, I'd replace the handle I'd use with a solid steel one.
I wouldn't be worried about trying to get too much more though, I know what Can be done on my Freak with these springs.

    "Hoss Quick-Draw"

    Hoss,

Your new "Hoss Quick-Draw" quick change reminds me of the Mach-1 that I have on my Bridgeport.

    Awesome job!

Hoss - that is OUTSTANDING ... i would not have thought about using the quill that way!!! THANKS .... question ... when you drilled and tapped your head - did you do that with a hand drill or did you remove your head and use a drill press or another mill .... mods for me - with only one such tool are a little more difficult ... i really need a drill press !!!!! and a bandsaw !!!

    thanks again for sharing !!

Reading your question about using a lever to operate the drawbar is what got me thinking.
I used a hand drill. Careful drilling the upper holes, there's only about 5/8 inch
of meat before you'll hit the upper bearing in the head. It's hardened, so you
aren't going to drill thru it, but it could dull the tip of your drill. the lower hole goes thru the head wall
so you only get about 3/16 threads but it's insurance.
There isn't room on the left side with the electronic box in the way, the edge is in line
with the center of the spindle and bearing,
but you could make the support wider and put the 2 holes side by side into
the thicker section of the head about 1/2 down from the top.
Lots of different ways it can be done. just keep in mind what you could be drilling into.
I have a links to sources for the bellevilles I used here.

Here's the new pivoting version, folds down flat to the front, all aluminum.
Video and print later, time for bed.
Just sold the idea to a major company who wants to mass produce them.

but.. but ... it was myyyy idea!!

*steals hoss's pichurs and scribbles his own name on em*

    :P

good going there. is it something that will end up as a kit for these and other machines, or are they gonna build it into an off the shelf machine?

my only concern with your design - as with many designs i see - is it puts pressure on the bearings. no worse that whacking with a hammer of course.

has to be by far the simplest solution ive seen though.

    congrats

Great job, and congrats on the sale Hoss! What you came up with is much more elegant than the similar designs the Germans have designed in the past (one of which requires a complete spindle swap and $500!).
My only question/concern isn't so much for the bearings but the quill rack, what's your take on the forces involved/imposed on the rack?
Can't wait to see your final design for a tool changer for the CNC'd version, a non "Tormach" design with an actual retention knob would be kinda cool.

Well if any of these suppliers start offering it, you'll know where they got it.
