gcode question, engraving line width with changing depth

I'm not sure if this is the right sub-forum for this question. If no, mods please move to where you think is appropriate.

If the drawing above is in the XY plane this shape could be engraved by using a pointed cutter moving along the X axis and moving down then up in Z to vary the width of the cut.

Is there a program that will generate the gcode needed to engrave in this way? I can generate 3D models or 2D vector art.

This is known as V-carving. Lots of CAM software has this ability. Artcam and V-carve pro are two I am aware of.

Thanks Matt. I didn't know what to look for but now I know the term "v carve" I can search.

On something that simple, it would be easy enough to add some Z moves. Another option is draw it in 3D and use a 3D tool path in the CAM software.

That was a simple example. I want to have a graphic designer generate 2D designs and then v carve them onto parts.

Then you probably want to use the Vectric V-carve software. I only test drove it once, but for 2-1/2 D router work, I was fairly impressed. Just not something I would normally use in my business, which is mainly machined parts.
