Bushings, if it is exactly like a BP. They are just plastic, normal replacement parts.

With the backgear in "High", and the dog clutch engaged, hold the front pulley with one hand, while turning the spindle back and forth with the other. If you get the "clunk", then it's probably wear in the splines between the spindle and the front gear of the backgear. If you're lucky, the wear will all be on the backgear side (female) spline, which is part of the backgear hub, and not stupid expensive or difficult to replace. If the spindle spline is worn, that's a whole 'nother ball of wax.... You can quiet it down, at least temporarily, by greasing the hell out of the splines with some thick grease.
Also make sure there's no slop in the dog clutch.

Ray L.
I think the wear is between the splines and back gear its consistent regardless of extension so it is most likely to be in the front back gear the only problem is going to be finding a supplier in the UK
thanks for the help

Hello Andrew Is your machine a 2 or 3 axis if 2 axis consider a second hand belt change head and put a VFD drive on it for the speed variation, or if 3 axis is it a Elrod type adation on the spindle feed if so try Terry Braithwaite at Bridlington on 01262 606691 he is the man who rebuilds Bridgeports and may mave something to help you Cheers Colin.
