Best bit for cutting 3/4 MDF or 1/2 plywood?

Whats the best bit to use for cutting 0.75 inch MDF or 0.5 inch plywood?
Through cuts, cutting out shapes, and holes?

Right now I have a single speed routher at 25k RPM and have cut at about 50-100 IPM with a straight 2-flute carbide bit. I'm looking to improve cut quality and or speed.

    Thanks,
    W.

What diameter bit? What are you using for a spindle?

The bit im using is a 0.25 inch straight 2-flute carbide from Amana.
The 'spindle' is a off the shelf craftsman router with a 1/4" collet and 25,000 RPM single speed. ITs a cheap router. It has a plastic body, but pretty sturdy. I think it draws about 6 amps.

I have been taking 0.125 cuts at about 30 IMP. but am not sure if thats good or not. Table is 24x24, actual range is about 21x11 (New gantry risers will increase the Y)

25,000 rpm is going to dull you're bits pretty quickly. Ideally, you'd want to cut the rpm in half.

At 25,000 rpm, you should have no trouble cutting 1/8" deep at 200ipm with that bit.

A 2 flute downcut spiral will let you go even faster. Actually far faster than your spindle has power for.

If you can't slow the rpm down, try to cut as fast as possible.

I guess I can try the HarborFreight speed control until I get a SuperPID.

    Thanks

That will really cut back on the routers torque. You may not have enough left to keep the bit spinning, just be careful and keep one hand on the speed dial and the other on the e-stop just in case.

I guess I'll just have to get the SuperPID. It is supposed to keep the torque better than the HF type controls.

Oh yes. It monitors the speed and maintains RPM's no matter what... Well up to what your router can put out. The HF works, but all it does it cut back the power... When you have it all the way down, you can almost stop the router by hand.
