    Face Grooving (G72) Problem

    Hi guys,

    I've got an issue at work on our Mori Seiki SL-25 when trying to create a canned cycle for a face grooving operation. There's a pocket in the face groove - cutting out the webbing on a pulley so there's an undercut that starts at the top and continues down to a boss.

    We're using G72 with all the usual PQUWF commands but instead of roughing out, it goes straight to the finished profile - like it's just read a G70 command. On our Hitachi Seiki, we just input a regular G72 line, but add an "R" value to the syntax. Is there something similar on the Mori Seiki? We have enabled parameter 8110 (G71/G72 pocketing). Our local representative isn't much help.

    We don't use Cad/Cam and write all programs manually, so canned cycles are (usually) our friend.

    A brief sample of the profile reads something like this:

    G00 Z-17.5 X235.0
    G01 Z-18.0
    X200 Z-24.0
    X150 Z-30.0
    X70.0
    G03 X50.0 Z-20 R10
    Z-18.0

    I've omitted everything just so you can see the basic profile. The 50mm X position is a boss that extends out to Z0.0 (hence the pocketing)

    I hope that makes sense and someone can show me the correct syntax!

    Thanks in advance for any assistance!

    Re: Face Grooving (G72) Problem

    Its been a while since ive done any programming on the SL-25 they have at work (i can look tomorrow), but it might need a double G72.

    CNC Fanuc G72 Canned Cycle Facing

    G72 W R
    G72 P Q U W

    Correct, it does require 2 G72 lines, we have no problems using G71/72 in general, its just this particular face grooving operation that has us stumped. We think there is another value in the 2nd G72 line : PQUW""F

    Ohh... sorry, miss read your post.

    When you run the cycle, does it complete the tool path correctly (aside from functioning like a G70), with out alarming out ?

    No worries, it's hard sometimes to get everyone on the same page!

    Yep, that's exactly what it does, no alarms.

    Re: Face Grooving (G72) Problem

    G71/G72 Canned cycle

    G71 U.1 R.03
    G71 P10 Q20 U.01 W.005 F.01
    N10 G0 X..... Z.....
    G1 Z0
    ;
    ;
    ;
    ;
    ;
    N20 X......

    Explanation of lines
    G71 U.1(DESIGNATES DEPTH OF CUT) R.03(RETRACT AMOUNT AFTER EVERY CUT)
    G71 P10 Q20 U.01(AMOUNT OF STOCK LEFT FOR FINISH IN X) W.005(AMOUNT OF STOCK LEFT IN Z) F.01(FEEDRATE FOR ROUGHING)
    N10 (BEGINNING OF CANNED CYCLE)
    ;
    ;
    ;
    ;
    N20 (END OF CANNED CYLCE)

    If U and W are left blank or have zeros then no finishing stock will be left on part
