Interesting proposal, not many diy grinder projects you can take up
How big a surface grinder are you looking at to build?
tiny somthing like 10"x5" (x,y) for simple nothings that go on in the shop i have most of the materials and time so why not and so i can make broaches out of old broken endmills or pisten pins...

Check this out; "Vest Pocket" Grinder The plans are old but can be a good start. Just make sure to make the frame real stout, the stiffer the better
Some where I might have another set of old plans, if I can find them I'll post them.
People will laugh/make fun of this type of thing, but back in the day stuff was built at home because no one could afford to buy it. It wasn't that long ago that the thought of a home built CNC was crazy
sweet that is a start i have some good ideas to start but i cant find the motovation to make the z axi right...

I would be interested in a small surface grinder project also.
Thanks for the idea

Still collecting parts for this one.
Now have a variable speed 0-4000 motor on it.
Needs a ball screw and linear slides on Z. Old screw is hopeless.
Super X3. 3600rpm. Sheridan 6"x24" Lathe + more. Three ways to fix things: The right way, the other way, and maybe your way, which is possibly a faster wrong way.
Fwiw ..
I am building a CNC T&C machine.
200x400 mm area, 600 kg steel, 32 mm ballscrews, AC brushless servos.
Table is a 440x600x100 mm surface plate, granite.
I have all the main components, finishing lathe refit (new servos, spindle is 2.5 kWservo) and VMC first, both nearly done.
