I have slowly been collect stuff to build my jrgo and have seen some smc800/1500 advertised in a local newspaper and wonder are thesse control boards ok for my project.

well,
for what I have been reading.
this smc board, can only direct one step per motor.
and I would recomend to FIRST find a program that can work with a SMC board.
because there are almost NO programs who can work with that kind of boards.
