i am thinking about a plasma cutter to cut 3mm checkerplate but am worried about the quality of the cut. i have been looking around at these threads and saw one using a router .how is sheet clamped.is it possible to get a good enough cut with plasma on aluminium sheet to weld after.

Plasma works very good with aluminum (especially if it is high def).
If you are cutting by hand your cut quality will only be as good as you are at setting and operating the equipment.
