    Milling a peice of steel

I am needing to mill 1/4" off a peice of steel, no idea what kind.
My part is 2" x 2" square. I was thinking of using my trusty 2.5" face mill.

    What DOC? .01?
    What RPM? 1000?
    What FeedRate? 5 IPM?

I have never touched steel before with my mill(X3) so I really have no idea.

I would say roughly 500-800 rpm(this is including 500%-800% increase for carbide inserts) but I could be wrong since ive never done it for indexed cutters. You can go .025 maybe more with carbide but I wouldnt go past .050 a cut and I have no idea on feed rate.

a good speed and feed formula.
    3.82 X SFM X DIA. OF CUTTER = RPM
RPM X # OF INSERTS X LOAD PER TOOTH = FEED

    3.82 is a fixed number
SFM can be found on insert card or cutter info.

    3.82 x 450 x 2.5 =687rpm (sounds safe)
as far as feed, i dont know your insert #, load per tooth,,about .002-.003 sounds safe.
