    My linley Jig Borer- Pics and questions...

    I have a good condition Linley jig borer that I want to convert to CNC.

    I think I will go with a xylotex 3 axis setup for the conversion.

    here are a few pics and following are a few questions.

    Ok, now the questions-

    1. I would like to use the original leadscrews which are extremely accurate and ground. I think that making anti backlash nuts out of plastic (delrin? nylon?) would be my best bet. this would not wear the leadscrews, would eliminate backlash and be cost effective. Are their any obvious flaws in this plan?

    2. I plan to retro fit the ends of the leadscrews with ball bearings this will eliminate some backlash and make for more smooth consistent cuts.

    3. which motors from xylotex would be best suited to my machine. I will be machining mostly aluminum and mild steel.

    4. what is the best way to connect the motors to the leadscrews? I would like to be able to use all axis's in a manual mode with handwheels. If I have no power applied to the motors will I be able to move the axis's with the motors still coupled to the leadscrews? I was thinking of mounting handwheels to the rear shaft on the motors...

    This will be my first CNC retrofit. I used to work in tool and die where I was a grinder hand. A large part of my job was running CNC (moore with nasa cnc conversions) jig grinders.

    looking forward to any imput and help you can provide.

    Nate.

    Nate,

    I recently picked up a Linley Jig Bore also. If you are still planning on converting it to CNC and would be interested in selling the quill power feed parts, I would be interested.

    Thanks, Kurt.

    Wow Kurt;
    That post is 9 years old! Great looking machine though. Plus, I have never thought of using a quill dial indicator to center a hole. Wow, learn something everyday!
    have a gud un!

    Bill, yeah, I knew it was a long shot, but you never know! But how did you see pics of my Linley, I did not post them ...

    Here are some pictures of my little shop though.
