A little clarification. Stormelf has Windows XP, he is looking for software now. The interface and driver checkout without the PC. I'm not using XP to control hardware, anybody have any suggestions?
Phil, Still too many interests, too many projects, and not enough time!!!!!!!!

Download the latest version of Mach3 and try it. It's free for up to 1000 lines of g-code. www.artofcnc.ca

Go to www.machsupport.com and watch the tutorial videos. They explain how to set it up and get it working far better than I can explain here.

I'm using mach2 with winxp without problems. I found that certain drivers can screw up the port and make it not work.

I am also having problems with XP

I too have been making my own Printer-port interface as a prelude to re-using some driver boards I built many years ago.

Testing with the OCXDriverTest simply locked-up the computer, even after re-loading Mach2 and re-booting.

Following Art's advice in the optimisation XP.txt file, I found I could get ~some~ sort of control if I set my computer as a 'Standard PC'.

Then the OCXDriverTest worked fine, and I had a fairly steady 'pulse rate'. But when I revert to ACPI computer (needed to enable my Local Area Network) then the pulse rate is hopping around madly and I get zero 'output' to my interface.

I am seriously wondering about using a (commercial) USB interface instead of the printer port, partly to reduce the number of variables I'm juggling.

A USB to parrallel will not work for CNC control. For most software the parallel port needs to be directly contolled by the driver and a USB interface does no allow this.

The ACPI inteface should not be a prereq for networking. If the board is stuborn about it I would get a PCI slot NIC for a couple bucks off eBay.

geoff, did you reboot your computer after installing mach2? In the manual it says theres a second driver that might fix your situation. first try to uninstall mach2 and install it again.

What kind of pc are you running? mach software doesnt run on some laptops, including I think all centrino laptops(pentium M)

In answer to Jon, yes I did re-boot after re-installing. That's when I tried the steps in the optimization guide.

Am I right to guess from DieGuy's note that Standard PC mode is normal? And what is a 'NIC' please?

NIC - Network Interface Card, ie a PCI ethernet card.
