I have found Benjamin Steel very competitive, recent example, one place quoted me $267 plus shipping for a 1" X 7" X 36" 1018 CRS, Benjamin steel price was $66 including delivery, they are very close to me and have their own trucks and regular routes which of course accounted for the no delivery charge.

ok seriously.
I'll assume you're after small bar stock quantities. the stuff is as common as sand. see if you can find a local service centre. yellow pages are a good. shipping heavy low value stuff across the country does not contribute to the inexpensive part. metal prices vary considerably with quantity purchased so you are buying enough you'd be better to concentrate it with a local supplier for best prices

the 1018/mild steel is low carbon. hot rolled is cheaper than cold rolled. and $55 is a good price. should i send 2?
