    X3 Motor Tuning / Units

    Hey All,
    I am quite the newbee when it comes to machining. I have made a few pieces, but the distances are not right. My holes are smaller than what the model says. Currently all in Imperial mode. I know I have my tool sizes and paths correct. Seems the mill is just a little off. Could this be due to my driver test scoring a 25 when the ports n pins was set at 35? How do I test my machine for 35 and 45?

    Can I change mach3 to think its in MM mode? Can you please tell me the steps and speeds for my motor tuning page? I am running at 25000hz (the slowest kernal speed)

    If your getting consistent machining results but the size is off then steps per unit being incorrect is the most likely culprit.

    Mine is set at 10160 steps per inch. At ten microsteps. Your microstep might be different.

    Check the driver manual, it will tell you the dip switch settings for microstep setup of the driver.

    About 50 to 60 inch per min on the X and Y is OK for most users. Bit slower on the Z

    Mine is still set at the default 25 microsteps. Can I still use your value of 10160? Is that metric or imperial?

    Hi, Joe

    If your not getting the proper cut length and your circles are small, You need to increaser the Steps Per value in Config, Motor Tuning, For each Axis.

    Steps Per setup exam. stepper 200 steps per 1 turn X 20 turn screw per inch =
    4000 steps Per.

    If you change the 25 kernel speed to 35K you need to restart Mach3, The steps per stays the same but you will need to re-tune the Velocity & Acceleration settings.

    Lets Try Again

    On the syil site I found:

    Ball Screw is Metric 5.08 TPI
    Stepper per rev 200

    Micro Steps 2 4 5 10 20 25 50 100 2032 4064 5080 10160...

    Maximum Traverse Speed at 25000 Hz
    738 369 295 148 74 59 30 15 Inches Per Minute

    So, in mach3, how do I know which value to use for steps per and velocity?

    Mariss, designer of the Gecko drives, says any thing over 10 microsteps in a stepper drive is a waste.

    So I go with ten. But by all means use 25. That's OK.

    Then steps per inch will be 25400

    Does this mean that if I use 1000 (25400 / 25.4 ) it will be metric?

    Yes for metric it would be 1000 steps per mm

    You Guys Rock!

    It looks like it is stepping in mm's. I will mill a part and see if its milling the right dimensions. I'm hoping turning it from 35khs down to 25khs will fit it.

    Humour, and 'yes'

    OK.
    Start with the 'humour'. Does anyone else 'love' the fact that Syil, quote the ball screws as 'Metric', and give their pitch as 5.08 teeth per inch...
    In fact (of course), the threads are 5mm pitch.
    The steppers are 200 steps per rev, so the 'default' single stepping size, working in metric, is 5/200mm = 0.025mm
    Now, the question of how fine to microstep, is that normal steppers, go very significantly 'non linear' in their responses, as you do smaller steps, so though a controller may be able to offer you hundreds of micro steps, the 'real' limit on reasonable resolution, will be much larger. In general different manufacturers make slightly different 'claims' in this regard, but normally 8 to 16 microsteps, is the 'upper limit'. However using smaller microstep numbers, to make the maths 'easier', is still worthwhile, and in some cases the drives will be smoother. So, using 25 microsteps, gives you a 'nominal' step size of 0.001mm, which is nice to work with, and makes setting up easy.
