Bridgeport and Hardinge MK2 , cant home z-axis

if the z axis is bellow half way it runs down to the soft stop, if it is above, it runs up to soft stop, thats all it will do,
how can you use the manual free wheel with out homing to reset soft stops ?

Your question is incomplete. There is no such thing as a bridgeport and hardinge.

What is the model and control on your machine?

Sounds to me like you need to replace the Z axis encoder.
