    Post New guy needing recommendations

    Hello all,

I am new to the world of CNC, and I have questions as I am nearing the completion of my first CNC router project. I know I will basically need three programs to design, convert to G Code, and Control the steppers.

I want to get recommendations on what software to purchase for each of these tasks. My background is limited or none, so I am a clean slate. I would like to purchase once, by this I mean I would like to buy a comprehensive package that will allow me to grow into it. I will initially be designing home speaker enclosures, but at some point I would like to be able to do 3d work without having to learn another software package. I want to be cost conscious, but I also don't want to have to upgrade in a year and learn a new program.

Given my objectives, what recommendation can you offer?

    Thanks
    Jeff

if it was me i would look at A9cad, Mach3, and sheetcam. They are all free downloads. You will find the basics of all cad, control and nesting(gcode programs) to be similar. These are all great programs that would let you get fimiliar with things and then you could make a more informed decision.

While A9CAD works pretty good, and will get you started, I'd recommend something like DesignCAD for $89. http://www.imsisoft.com/prodinfo.asp?t=1&mcid=326

It's a very powerful program for the money. Combined with SheetCAM, it should easily handle all your 2D needs. It will also let you do 3D, and you can add MeshCAM when you need to do 3D toolpaths. www.meshcam.com

I've seen Les, the author of SheetCAM, recommend DesignCAD numerous times. It's the CAD program I learned on, and I highly recommend it. Download the demo and try it out.

And as was mentioned, you won't find a better control software than Mach3 for the money.

take a look at deskcnc while you are at it. its a pretty good cam program and it also can work in conjunction with their control board and some geckos or xylotex drivers. i think the program is 150 and the board is 100. Ive been using it for 2 years now with no problems. support is a little stuffy, but they know their stuff and will usually help if you ask in a very non amature sounding way.
    example
    Q) Hey, whats the deal with the blue lite blinking on the board thingy when the motors stop?
    A) <------ clears throat and responds to someone elses question
