    belt drive VS gear conversion?

Well I have seen many people convert there X2 to a belt driven spindle. what is the reason for doing this VS a rear conversion? I have changed the gearing from my motor going into the gearbox from a 30:13 to a 1.5:1 ratio. I have much higher spindle speeds and I have also kept the high and low function. So what would be the advantage of the belt driver over this?

    Noise for one.
Are they the nylon gears or did you change to steel gears.
the nylon gears are very easy to strip if you exceed the factory recs even a little bit.
A broken belt is a lot easier to change than a broken gear inside the head too.

Yeah it is noisy that's for sure. They are nylon and I do see how striping them would be a big issue.

Noise definitely!! plus a bit more spindle speed. Kits from Little Machine Shop well worth the money - well made easy to fit.

If you decide to go belt conversion and want to DIY I have free plans here.
PM Starleper1, I believe he sells a single pulley kit for $99.
The LMS kit as Andy said is on special for $110.

Yes I was looking at the kit from LMS an I am thinking it would be the way to go. I would like to make my own but I just don't have the round stock large enough to turn down the pulleys.

    Thanks for the reference Hoss.

Yes I sell kits for $99 with free shipping in the US

They are similar to the Steele kits except mine is a single pulley for speeds up to 4500 RPM.

Heres a pic of the kit. Installs in no time flat and is direct bolt on.

This kit is what I use on my mill with an X2 head, and I flycut, mill, groove, pretty much anything you want to do, and I've had zero problems.

Starleper1, just wondering if your kit leaves total access to the bolt heads/holes when installed? or does the belt run over top of them? The reason I'm asking is that I plan to build a bolt on direct pressure drawbar that uses those same bolt holes in the top of the mill. Please let me know. Nice kit by the way....and free shipping rocks!

The front bolt heads are totally open. The back two are semi covered by the motor plate when everything is assembled.

I designed this kit just for the reason you are intending.

    Here is a better pic.
