    how do a make...

    a cone end (like this >) I just bought my first lathe, trying to figure out how to do it. I dont care the degree of the angle (>) just how to make it and what its called. I want to make it like a dead center, just need to know how. I have a 9x20 lathe, What tooling would i need.

    It's called a taper. I'd call the mechanism used to cut them a 'topslide', you'll also find them referred to as compound or compound slides. If that doesn't mean anything to you, you'd do well to hunt down some books or websites on basic lathe use, as they'll go some way to telling you about this sort of thing.     They are for older lathes but the basics of tool grinding and set-ups and how to operate are timeless all basics are!
