would there be a problem using a tormach for this?

there has been a few times that i wanted to do internal splines but had no way (or hadn't thought of a way) to do them myself and i didn't want to have them edm'd. i just stumbled across this video and a light bulb light up in my head. i am sure it is not the most efficient way to do it but i like to make do with the tools i have available.

i would need to rigidly lock the spindle to use a holder like in the video or fabricate a holder off of the spindle housing. before i put anymore thought into this, is there any risk of damaging the machine? would this over load the steppers?

I have the same question. I only need to do a keyway but don't know anything about broaching.

I've seen that done before. Most people are concerned about what that's going to do to your spindle bearings.

If it was me, I'd mount the cutter rigidly to the side of the head and leave the spindle bearings out of it.

the more i think about it, i think that's the route i'd take also. it would be easier than trying to figure a way to rigidly lock the spindle and would not stress the bearings in any way.

I've seen slotting attachments that run perpendicular to the spindle, but always thought it would be neat to make one that ran parallel.
