    Sherline 2000 CNC Mill

    Hi all,

Ive had this machine for about a year now and its been brilliant.

Very versitile machine, sturdy and quite powerful.

After a recent house move ive got my self a workshop and its now tucked in the corner ready for more play time.

Over the time i have had the mill ive done a few things

    Vice Clamps:

    • With a 3 flute carbide 6mm endmill, i was pushing 1.5mm DOC at 350mm/min <- this i was very happy with
    • With a 2 flute HSS 6mm endmill (cheap, from ebay for 3 quid), i managed to get 3mm DOC at 225mm/min <- even more happier with this..

i put a 10 degree ramp over 20mm, and tboth the 2 and 3 flute cut lovely, alot less chatter..

    Logo plaque:

So i did these plaques for a mate, not overly happy with them.

I did 45 degree hatching with the engraving and it has steps in it.

im using a 90 degree spot drill for this as i was advised it would be ok.

    D.O.C 0.5mm
    spindle speed: 2800
    Feed: 120 MMPM

3hrs 40 mins to complete... (forever)

Anybody have any suggestions on how to do this quicker? Also would the 10k sherline pulley set be better for me

I will get some more pictuers of the new setup soon

Simplest thing you can do is lower your Z height during moves. You wouldn't think so but it helps a lot.

And Speed up everything else as far as you can. Higher spindle speeds will help a lot aswell.

Sometime it just takes a long time.

For engraving buy engraving cutters or make your own.

Engraving is usually done at far greater spindle speeds, especially with the extremely small cutter diameters often used.

Make use of tool changes. In this case a larger end mill to remove the bulk of the material might have cut machining time significantly. Ideally use the largest mill possible.

    Consider chemically machining the plaque.

Pretty sure an appropriate sized piece of hose and a couple hose clamps would allow you to make a new coupler. Maybe not the same style.
