    New High Speed Spindle

    Attachment 240516

I finally attached my cheap high speed spindle I got off ebay. I needed something to do some engraving with, but I didn't want to spend a lot. This will rotate at around 35000 rpm if I remember correctly. Still need to wire it up and take her for a test drive.

I think these are DC motor with a collet attached to the end. I see them advertised allot on ebay. Post results if they are worth a buy.

Yes, they are pretty common..and cheap which is why I got it. If I use this function more I may invest in a more expensive spindle. I has a power pack and the motor is rated at 48V for full RPM.

I will, once I get her hooked up. I may do that soon just to see how it works, then do something more permanent later.

This is a test I ran. The Z on the right is 1mm deep no coolant.. notice how the chips filled in the one of the left is .5m deep with oil as coolant. I don't have a coolant system but it looks like I will need one to do this. It seems the hot chips melt back into the cut... I'm also going to try increasing the feed rate to see if that helps keep it clean.

Any advice is appreciated. I haven't done this before. But otherwise, for a cheap spindle it's not bad.

What tool, depth of cut, feed rate etc? There are calculators available to get the best cut.
