I have a Umco unimat lathe that I want to convert into a CNC lathe. Can someone point me in the right direction. I need 2 stepping motors and a controller card that will work with the Mach3 software. I don't mind a kit that I have to make, i'm just looking for a cheap solution.

Cheap is always relative.

I would suggest you get hold of a Gecko G540. They will be available in about 2 weeks. I have been testing the REV 1 G540, and it is impressive.

For a first time conversion it is the way to go in my opinion. You just need to provide a powersupply, say a 6A 48V linear power supply, some steppers and that's it.

Rev2 will also provide an isolated 10Vdc output that can be used for controlling your spindle speed if you require that and have an appropriate spindle speed controller on your lathe.

about the same cost to ship as cost for the package, should work with mach3, nema 17 is a good size for the unimat
