Cheap is always relative.
I would suggest you get hold of a Gecko G540. They will be available in about 2 weeks. I have been testing the REV 1 G540, and it is impressive.

For a first time conversion it is the way to go in my opinion. You just need to provide a powersupply, say a 6A 48V linear power supply, some steppers and that's it.
Rev2 will also provide an isolated 10Vdc output that can be used for controlling your spindle speed if you require that and have an appropriate spindle speed controller on your lathe.
