What Type Cutting Tool to Mill SST ?

    Hi Everyone !

We are machining alot of Stainless Steel Hydraulic cases 10 x 7 x 15.
We are roughing them out from a billot on a Toyoda and Seiki horizontal cnc mills with 40 taper spindles. Right now they are using 4fl carbide end mills. But the time loss is too much, does anyone have any suggestions for different tooling that can remove alot of metal faster ? THANKS !!!

high feeds and appropriate coating and lots of cooling.

high feeds to keep heat in the chip instead of the workpiece.maybe be a three flute or even two for bigger/hotter chips
coatings since the sillicium in stainless wears down your cuttingedges faster then .........
and lots of the cooling again to keep workpiece and cutter at decent temps.

your supplier shoud be able to tell ya wich coating but ..w/hell how would they know ?

    just 1cts.
Finally CHIPS you can have as much as you can without the doc. complainting about your cholesterol.

sandvik kenmetal iscar indexable endmills will get the job done faster. carbide end mills run slow. ofcoarse that depends on how big of an endmill you can run

    Talking Milling Stainless

Indexable type tooling may work OK in certain situations but we have had much better tool life and decreased our run times by using A-symmetric solid carbide end mills set out of shrink fit holders.

We like and use Hanita end mills but there are others to choose from.

I can take 3-4 times the depth of cut than an inserted tool will live through.

Check with mitsubishi cutting tools. They have cutters that really move in stainless, will sell on performance PO, and are less expensive in the long run
