They seem too hold the same size shanks, so what are the differences between collet sizes?

Hi Luke,I think it is basically that you would choose the ER 16 if you were
perhaps doing finer work or need access against shoulders that would clash
with the bigger dia chucks.

As you get up to ER40, ER50 the collets have a 2mm compression range.

Having worked with large tooling for a few years now an ER16 seems incredibly small - I often mistake an ER20 for an ER16...

Same with everything else, arbors, tapped holes etc. I used to consider an 80mm Face Mill to be a 'large' tool, and clamp jobs down with M6 bolts. The job I'm on at the mo involves a 400mm diameter Side n Face cutter sticking out over 300mm....
