If the shape from part 2 is all on one plane, the you should be able to select that edge, then use the Extrude command, and go from surface (choose part 1 face) and go either a blind distance or to the face of part 2.

If that does not work, you may need to create a plane and then use the command "convert entities" to create a new sketch of the "pieces" of part 2 that you want to extrude. The use this new sketch to extrude the feature.

Or one of several other methods...

Got it, thank you. I was hoping I can just use 3D part 2 to extrude
from part 1 in one go, without getting involved in sketching (kind of
logical) - but it could be naive perception of the beginner

This will most likely cause you more problems due to all the weird trimming that you have to do. Your part looks simple and if it won't be going into some detailed assembly it will work

Start out by trimming and filling in the knob to look like this.

Then you can shell the part to the outside. This would have worked better if I trimmed the radius on the unimportant side of the knob. None the less this made the part opposite of what it was with enough material to make your other part by trimming material.

    Trimmed

I don't know exactly what you are trying to do but you should be able the shell your way to your final part.

You'll have to explain more burrman. I only do it this way because I don't no any better. It sounds like using a boolean cut would be easier but I have never used it in SW. Please continue!

I found a youtube video explaining it. Your correct that is much easier, But in 2010 it is using the combine feature and subtracting the material from one part from the other.

Type "how to boolean cut in solidworks" on youtube there is a good tutorial on it

    Thank you Burrman

Yeah, you can find most stuff there.. Using "Indent" has some advantages also....Check this site out for some info:

He will explain some advantages of the indent to do a boolean cut...

I would use a derived sketch of the original geometry, that way it will stay linked.

Check out derived sketches in help.

    FYI
After using the indent feature I changed the some dimensions on the knob and the negative changed with it.

my preference over indent would be to use 'combine' w/ the subtract button clicked..
