    couple of thoughts..

-With your 3phase motor and vfd - all you need is a spindle encoder and you can rigid tap. (without a servo) Linuxcnc does spindle synced motion.

-you have a rotory axis on your spindle I see. It isn't for the faint of heart but linuxcnc does kinematics. it can do the math to translate from joint/axis motion to 'part' motion. It makes gcode programming much easier. there are some sample configs.. but like I say - you would have to read up.

I will be watching your VFD install like a hawk. I will be doing the same for my Tormach Build. I don't know anything about them, so what better thread to turn to

Got the 56C motor in, boy it's heavy.
Went ahead and ordered the Vector VFD from Dealers today and they shipped today.
When I get the RC motor in from the slow boat I'll show a comparison lineup of all the motors I have.

It may give you some ideas.

Peter, great thanks for the links, I'm way behind on my thread reading, and Hoss waits for no man! I'll check them out.
Ricce, thanks for your offer as well.

My much neglected build thread is here.

SDP-SI was out of stock on the L belt I needed for the 3 phase motor and mcmaster didn't carry the length I needed
so I jumped on google and found this site that had it and much cheaper too.

Nice find Hoss! I have spent many hours looking for the best deal on the HTD 5mm 40tooth pulleys I need. Only found it cheaper one other place (by only a couple $) but they had a minimum order of 3 units and I only need 2. I think I know now where I'm going to get my pulleys next week.

  10. #4210
Yeah they have a $15 min order, i actually had to add an extra belt for the rc motor to just get there.
    It's all good.

I do this all the time, so I'll help you out by pointing it out to you - is it worth spending hours to save a couple of bucks? :P Whenever I notice myself getting stuck in a loop trying to work out the best way to save 10 bucks, I just try to do an hour of overtime and work and splurge on the "good" stuff haha.

Oh I know it. But I have to say that by having done this for years I have really improved my "finding a good deal on the internet" skills a lot.
But yes I do have to just stop my self sometimes, its almost like gambling.

Which VFD did you end up getting? Why did you choose it, and am I reading that you are buying a toothed belt for the 3 phase? That belt place is about 30 minutes from me

I ordered the one from Dealers I mentioned here.

It's a great price on a sensorless vector VFD to go with the same motor mentioned.

If you want to learn more about 3-phase motors, I watched these vids by Lewellyn on youtube, he really makes it easy to understand.

This line from the Teco manual notes a few of main specs to verify when matching the motor to the VFD.
    • Check inverter and motor nameplates to determine that they have the same HP and voltage
ratings. (Ensure that full load motor amps (FLA) do not exceed that of the inverter. (6.0 for my motor, 7.5 for the Teco))

I have both Phase1/2 conversion and Beltdrive conversion DVDs and I have a couple of questions. The answers may be buried somewhere in this thread, but I couldn't find them in a search.

Which size belt do I use for the 2-speed quill belt drive?
Which size pulleys do I use for the Y-axis motor when it is mounted at the back and which size belt?

From the G0704 quill belt drive info.txt
The timing pulley version uses a 75 tooth 3/8 inch wide XL timing belt.
The v-belt version uses a 3L150 fractional HP belt. ( Note: a 2L150 could be used also)
For the rear Y I used a pair of 25 tooth XL pulleys with a 77 tooth XL belt.
You can use any pulley size or type you wish, this belt length calc will help you determine the length, use 5.188 for the center distance, doesn't have to be exact, there's plenty of adjustment + or -.
