I just bought a used air cylinder with a 3.25 bore and 1.5 inch stroke that should do the trick. But damn, it's heavy. How much does yours weight and will it damage anything if it's too heavy?

Also you mention that this version is easier on the spindle bearings. Is that because the cylinder is attached with springed bolts and it moves up as it pushes?

Thanks, and keep up the great work.

    Thanks!
If that's a single stage cylinder it's only going to give a little over 800lbs @ 100psi, not enough even for light duty.
Ideally for the g0704 you'll want 1200 available for LD and 1800-2200 for normal use.
Don't know what my self-made 3-stage cylinder weighs but the whole power drawbar weighs 7lbs 13.6 oz, just checked.
Yes this PDB doesn't push down on the drawbar and bearings, it technically squeezes the bellevilles.
On another note the SC cup is half way done.

Hmm. I took a look at the videos again a few times. I can't see how it squeezes? Seems that the piston is still pushing down/out, which makes contact with the top of the spindle, then because of the springed bolt it pushes the entire cyclinder section up?

  3. #4383
Yeah the cylinder pushes down, it makes contact with the top of the drawbar.
Because the mount is not attached to the mill head the cylinder takes the path of least resistance and lifts the mount till the plate makes contact with the bottom of the tophat that the bellevilles sit on.
As the cylinder continues to push down on the drawbar and up on the bellevilles the path of least resistance is to compress the belleviles.
When the bellevilles compress, the drawbar moves down opening the collet.
The 2 springs are really just to keep the pdb mount pushed down when the drawbar is released so the plate won't rub the tophat.

Ok. I think I got it. Looks like there is a lip on the lower horizontal bracket that fits under the washers? So that basically holds the washers in place while the cylinder pushes down to compress them.

    Nice!

    Hoss,

Awesome job on these cups, not just the actual parts but also the imagination to design and produce them !!!

About a year ago, I bought the same Craftsman powdercoat gun based solely on your use and opinion of them. I've been very happy with it except for the OEM cup, too small, hard to clean out and change powders and leaks powder badly if I don't tape up the cup.

Sorry if I missed it but, do you plan to sell some of the XC cups ? I'll buy several to start with if so.

    Great work, as always, thanks,

    Steve

Thanks very much Steve, check back in a couple weeks.
I have it tied up making parts for a new printer but then I'll get back to making some extras.

Thanks a lot Hoss, will do. I appreciate your willing to make some extras for sale, that's great ! Talk with you then.

Yeah, it takes a day to make one and a couple days to be sure the glue cures.

Very nice. Are you doing anything to seal the print to make it air or water tight?

Yes I coat inside and out with the Weld On #3 cement, it's very watery and seals it up nice and leaves a shiny smoother finish.
Video shortly of all 3 cups spraying powder in my kitchen.

Wahoo they work! Better than my originals but I imagine that's because of the o-rings I use in these.
Do need to mod the SC a little, it's a bit tight but still went on and off like I expected.
Now to get making some ally stepper mounts to powder coat for real.

He has still got a laser around there we haven't seen. Stay tuned. Maybe trimming or fusing the edges of a print? 4 or 5 axis, trunions and a laser? My imagination is already at a dead end. Wear laser proof glasses.

    Hoss,
It is obvious the O rings do a great job. Have you tried to add them to the "original" cups also??? And what size rings did you use?

    Thanks in advance.

You should, everyone should have at least one in their shop.
I remodeled the Super Capacity cup for more clearance and strength.
Someone suggested I try to get Sears to buy it, too bad they don't sell these powder coaters anymore.

A fellow on youtube (builtrodewreckedit) made a suggestion an hour ago to make a funnel to screw onto the powder bottle so you can refill the little cups without a spoon as I did in the video.
Here's what I came up with, you can still keep the contents dry with a pop bottle cap.
