I say make do, it's only temporary. The stock screw only has one bearing. Try adjusting the 2 leadnut screws in the z slide, it could be forcing the screw offcenter a bit.

somehow I got really lucky and letting it sit over night loose got rid of most of the wobble. there is still about 0.001 wobble left so I am going to just deal with it until i can get the ball screw. the Z axis will be the first parts I cut after testing. Now I am just tramming the table in and then I can focus on finishing the enclosure and flood system.

I was wondering for those of you that have Nema34 906 Oz for the Z axis, how do you like to wire it up? I currently have mine wired to bipolar series, but was wondering if another setup would work better.

    Re: Hoss's G0704

Bipolar parallel is the preferred method, it provides a better torque curve over series.

    Re: Hoss's G0704

Semi-continuing on from the last couple of posts, what is the best way to mount the mill, on a bench or on a stand? I'm not finished with my conversion yet and I just moved house so my mill is in pieces. In my old house I had it mounted on a bench, but in the new house I don't have a bench in the workshop yet, so I'm free to select bench or stand. Obviously a pro for mounting on a bench is that the mill is stable (assuming the bench is stable), but you would not be able to get to the back of it for maintenance. With a stand it could be moved around, but may not be as stable (depending on the construction of the stand). Recommendations?

Being able to get at all sides is the biggest benefit IMO. If it needs to be up against a wall for shop floor clearance like mine then one movable on casters is beneficial but if you can bolt the stand to the floor or on a bench that still gives you room to get behind it then I'd go that way.

    Thanks, Hoss.

I don't think I would be able to bench mount it and be able to access it from behind without sacrificing too much of the floor space, so I'll look into getting some levelling casters and make a stand wide enough for it to still be stable. This should also give me a place to mount the electronics cabinet, which is 80cm (W) x 60cm (H) x 30cm (D), if I remember correctly.

    Re: Hoss's G0704

Need to put 3 equidistant holes in a round part and doing it on my drillpress will be good enough so I printed a mount for my little 3 inch 3-jaw.
Will print one for doing 2,4 or 8 holes too with an Octomount later.
Sometimes setting up the CNC is too much effort, goin old school, lol.

    hey hoss..

just out of curiousity....how much weight would be too much for the 0704 as far as motor goes

  16. #6236

    Re: Hoss's G0704

Adding about 30-40 lbs to the stock head seems acceptable in my experience but this includes any extensions, pdb's, air cylinders, etc.
Keep in mind if you replace the stock motor, remove the control box, strip out the gears and quill handle you recoup some of that weight.

    Re: Hoss's G0704

all the GOOD motors .... tenv 1000 to 1 CT and about 45 pounds alone
once i add extension in the head
    pdb
the xtra weight will be alottttttt
is it cool to add more weight and use gas struts or is the all extra weight just not good for the ways and dovetails...

  18. #6238

    Re: Hoss's G0704

Too much weight is not a good thing, struts can make it easier on the stepper but the column/dovetails still has that mass to be burdened with.
These aren't behemoths, they can handle some increases over stock but going extreme is fraught with pitfalls.

    Re: Hoss's G0704

Has anyone reported that their stock motor on a new machine only wants to run at half the rpm in reverse than forward? I don't recall reading that there was an adjustment for that.... with 519 pages in this thread.... Hard to find the details at this point !

That is what mine is doing right out of the crate.

Also, has anyone ever explored the use of a motorized PDB using a gear drive motor on a thread connected to an arm rather than an air cylinder ?
