Half speed in reverse is perfectly normal, I believe they do it for power tapping purposes, not much need to reverse otherwise in most cases.
It's been done before either with a belleville stack or directly turning the drawbar as in ray's design, very effective just works a little slower.

ok thanks.... their break-in procedure tells you to run at speeds that do not exist then !

That's crazy, mine tops at like 5 mph and seems fast. Might try an RC motor I have that never made it onto the mill as a spindle motor. it's about 5 times the hp.

Forgot this was something I wanted to revisit using the right angle attachment I made last year.

Huh..... Well, I ran my motor thru the first break in according to the book. Thought I'd find out what temp my all stock bearings run at. Ran it at 700 rpm for about 10 minutes no load, then took it up to 2300 rpm.

Sparks and blue flashes within 5 minutes of that !!

Looks like no one got the memo to use a better motor ?

Just got this machine last month. Didnt cut a thing with it yet ! Hope their return methods are easy....... sheeez !

Yes they are good with replacing them under warranty but also why many of us upgrade from stock to get more out of the machine especially for aluminum machining.

    Re: Hoss's G0704

I am familiar.... read every dang thread about the 704 I could find, currently disassembled and waiting on arizonavideo screws and mounts. Assumed I could get the X,Y and Z moving and do the motor after perhaps I had at least SOME run time. This was but a few minutes. ..... yikes what a hokey motor.

They must knurl the commutators to eat brushes that fast.

Would be nice to see them offer a version like PM with a BLDC motor and belt drive but eh, this basic motor makes upgrading to something of your choice an easier pill to swallow. Like mine there are plenty of choices of pulley/belt types and combos to suit a wide variety of user preference, same with motor options. I upgraded my motor/controller pretty quick and it was working perfectly fine, have it earmarked for my little lathe.

    Re: Hoss's G0704

I got my 704 give or take 1 1/2 months ago, and I finally got to do the run in procedure. I just used my hand to gauge the bearing/spindle temps. It seemed to be comfortable to the touch, so I figure all is well. I want to switch to a belt drive to reduce any noise, for one.

    Re: Hoss's G0704

Getting ready to convert my g0704 .i was able to pick up 5 NEMA 34 1161 oz-in steppers. Is this way over kill? my main concern is the 7+ lbs of stepper hanging off the table for the X axis . Y is going on the back . I like the idea of more power .but do know that's a good amount to hang off the end of the table.

    Re: Hoss's G0704

Way overkill even for the z axis.
570's are more than enough for anything that can be done on the 0704 for the x and y axis.

Heck, and I thought the 381's on the SX3 had plenty of speed and power.

    Re: Hoss's G0704

    Hi Hoss.

I think now would be a good time to tell people that any stepper over a 575 is just not needed for a 704 mill. The 575 is a really low inductance stepper so has the best speed of almost any stepper that you might want to run on a 704.

It is a 5.1A stepper that most people never run at full current and yet it still performs great.

For the Z if you want more power run a full power driver that will deliver the full 5.1A.

The China driver almost always use peak so you need to multiply that number by .707 for the RMS current.

To get full power from the 575 you need 7.2A peak.

So many people have asked for the Nema 34 Z stepper mount that I quit making the 23 which is a waste. I'm doing a test right now and I will be using the Nema 23 575 on the Z and will have it raise up and down my kids on the Z (did this before but no camera) a few time to make the point.

The best stepper ever made is the 575 Nema 23! Its cheep, has fantastic low inductance and runs well at 3.5A with no heat. At 3.5A it is really quiet too.

Just get the 575 and your done.

I ran the 575 on my Weiss 30 for the X and Y and it worked so well. The table on the 30 is exactly the same size as the small tableRF-45. I would never, unless I had them for free, run anything larger on that size mill. The 900oz Nema 34 is also great but it is a 6.1A stepper and only the largest China drive will run it at full power and it likes a little higher voltage so you have to under volt it if you stay at 50 or so volts for the 575 stepper.

All these guys running the Nema 34 on the Z are making it go slower than if they ran the 575. Well I hope I made my point.

OK but the ones I recommend all the time, countless times in this thread and on my website are 5.0 amp 570 oz/in steppers from automation tech.

Set up with the proper driver and power supply they give excellent performance as my many videos have also shown.

    Correct, the 5A 575 oz

I think one of the older speck sheets listed them as 5.1A but I forget.

Great stepper. On sale now for $45 ...
