Hey Hoss!
Dang you and your video on powder coating! :wee: You made it look so easy and the results so great, I spent some time on the net and fleebay.
As a result, have a Craftsman gun, a couple of spare cans, and a sampler pack on their way to me!:banana:
Now maybe I also can make some decent looking as well as functional stuff.
Thanks for the vid.

Have fun Art, problem I have is there are too many cool looking colors and textures
that my mill may end up looking like the Partidge Family bus.

Thanks,
I'm looking forward to it.

That powder coating video was extremely interesting Hoss! I've never thought about it or seen it in action, but it definately looks to be very useful, I love the translucent finish, I imagine if you didn't polish the parts but left the really cool swirl marks from the face or end mill it would look spectacular? If you had pieces you were joining together as you did, would you better to join them and then coat them so you don't add the coating thickness to the finished product?
Thanks for putting the video up, they are always very helpful and informative Hoss!
cheers,
Ian
It's rumoured that everytime someone buys a TB6560 based board, an engineer cries!
Thanks Ian,
I've done a few assemblies together and it works well as long as you don't want to take them apart later,
think of a thick paint on steroids, you'll have to cut it at the parting line to separate them.
If mating is an issue, you can use the heat resistant tape like comes with this kit to keep
powder from adhering and the tape can go in the oven.
If you ever watch American Chopper you can see them griping several times that the powder coater
didn't tape off and got powder where it shouldn't, they had to mill it off sometimes.
Same goes for holes, you'll need to redrill or tap them if you don't plug them first.
A few extra thou doesn't matter for these particular parts though.
Yeah whatever the surface looks like will show thru on the translucent, the solid colors and textures can hide many imperfections.
They recommend using a silver or chrome first with translucents if the surface isn't pretty to begin with.
Doing a second coat doesn't work too well with the Craftsman but there are more powerful ones than can.
I've fixed some booboos doing a second coat by warming the first finished coat back up to about 250 degrees and reapplying some more powder, it'll stick to the tacky surface.

Hey Hoss . Been a while since I have been on here . I quit using my little machineshop mill during the summer cause its just too hot in my garage . Just kinda wondering how much those little guys sell for after converted . Its just a little too whimpy for stuff I want to make . Heres a link to my thread for what I have in it . Its all on post 1 .

I should have listened to everyone from the begining and got the G0704 . It seems like the grizzly really went up in price or am I not remembering right ?
Im hoping CNC Fuzion has the 704 conversion now . I havent checked but really dont want to make it all .
Hey Lathemaster,
Looks like you have about $2100 invested so you may get that from someone seeing how you already
did the assembly work.
Would imagine you should at least get $1500 for a cnced sx2.
The 0704 has gone up about 150 since it's introductory price 2 years ago but so
has everything else at grizzly.
Cncfusion still doesn't have their kit for sale on their site as of ten minutes ago, they
showed the kit on their forum and were shooting for a july release but nothing since.

Got a new little toy to help with deburring, a cheapo 1x30 belt sander from HF,
actually came before Xmas.
Says wood only but breezed right thru ally too.
Got the tophat machined so I should have this PDB together shortly.

It probably says "wood only" because of the hazmat issues associated with the dust from the aluminum...
I'm going to go with something similar, but rig a cabinet with a big vacuum located in a lean-to that'll be "sort of" outside. Don't tell the authoritays...
Hoss,
That is a nice little sander that you just bought. What does this 1"x30" belt sander do that the 4"x36" disc/belt sander doesn't? On sale for $40, a HF 20% coupon would bring this little puppy down to only $32.
I finally pulled the trigger and ordered both of your DVD's. I'm only planning on doing the CNC conversion, but I thought I'd go ahead and pick up the Belt Drive DVD just because. I'm really looking forward to your ATC DVD.

mums the word bogiest
Thanks Titaniumboy,
the 1x30 is just a little more convenient to use for little jobs that need a square edge and
could sand inside an open slot.

I own that one. It is a good little sander. Just don't put a lot of stress on the belt. The motor stalls out really easy.
I noticed that too wtx, thanks.
She's looking better but that air cylinder needs some powdercoat now.

Hoss,
In the beginning of your mill project when you were running the belt drive on the Z-Axis, did you bore and tap the larger pulley to fit on the lead screw nub at the top? I am trying to get by for now with just getting it cnc'd up using plates cut from my cnc plasma table so i can mill some nice aluminum parts via cnc rather then botching them up trying to manually mill them. I have everything else worked out, just trying to decide on a solution for that Z axis pulley mounting.
There appears to be two spanner styler nuts that look like they lock together, it would seem that removing them and using the bored and tapped pulley tightened down and then locked in place with a set screw would do the same job. any insights you might share on how you connected that pulley or a picture by chance?
PS... Excited for that ATC DVD you mentiuoned a few posts back to come out!! I will be one of the first in line for it!
Thanks!
Chris
Tapping the z pulley is how Optimum does it on their belt driven z axis.
works well for them.
Got more atc stuff to do first but it'll get done.

Thanks Hoss, I shall make it so with the tap and set screw mounting and give her a whirl to see how it works out.
