    Hoss,

I had a semi-serious question on 5 axis CAM software. The most affordable next to the gmax/CNC_Toolkit, seems to be Deskproto, at ~$1250 depending on the exchange rate, but they only support certain machine designs for 5 axis, and the swiveling head isn't an option (hope my terms are right) they do support a trunion table with a rotary table on the table as the only 5 axis design, as far as I can tell. I plan to work in that direction, though it may be years with my G0704 build. Anyway thought I'd ask if you've investigated what configurations of 5 axis are supported, or if you just didn't intend to ever use 5 axis CAM.

I'd be willing to kick-in to get you a seat of something too, I appreciate all of the info you put out, and the DVDs are great.

I don't think you can get 5 axis simultaneous for less than 30K. Indexing isn't nearly as fun.

I took a look around to see how hard it would be to get the software working and it seemed like a pretty steep learning curve. You need to input all the machine geometry so it knows how the rotational axes affect the tool position.

    Thanks Pete,
I already have a trunnion table and said before that's the easier more conventional way to go about a 5th axis.
My head rotary 5th axis is first and foremost a head spacer for the extended Y travel.
Just like when I needed a head spacer for the X2 freak, I went for something more than just a boring block of metal.
The 2nd intended use for it was for indexing and 3rd was as a 5th axis.
I knew that software for it would be a stretch but you never know what the future holds.
If you're serious about 5th axis work, definitely go the trunnion route.
I'll have to check out Deskproto, thanks for the link.

Thanks and my condolences to you too.
Been spending time going back thru old pics and found a few from work of parts I've made that may be interesting.

awesome looking parts hoss, are they all steel and did you use cnc to make that mold?

  9. #3869
Thanks, yes they are all tool steel, P20 for the mold and A2 and O1 for the die and punches.
No, didn't get the easy way, these are all done on manual equipment, no computers to do all the work for me.
Did all the machining, heat treating, grinding, sharpening and assembly to .0005 tolerance.

Found a few more pics during another reminiscing session I don't think I shared before.
They just show how I used my portable bandsaw with my vise with a little pivot bracket mounted on it.
Slide the pin on the saw (a bolt with the head cut off) into a hole when you need to cut something.

    Hoss,

Have you ever seen any 3D CAD models of the G0704? I've seen a Solidworks 3D model of the Optimum BF-20, but I'm not sure how different the Optimum mill is from the G0704.

    Regards,

He sits at the door and barks when he needs to go out then hops out as soon as the door opens enough.

    KBBM advice

I was playing with my KBBM 125 and treadmill motor trying to mimic Hoss's expirments. I started it up and it was running counter clockwise. I unplugged it, reversed the high and low on the Potentiometer and plugged it back in. The motor started up as soon as I plugged it in, and before I could unplug it the whole thing fell on the floor. I put the Potentiometer back to where it should be, but now the whole setup is dead. I think I should have reversed the motor leads or the 120 VAC. The KBBM manual doesn't give polarity for the 120 VAC. Anyway I don't know if I blew up the board, the motor, or the Potentiometer and was hoping for some advice.
    Thanks
    Ray

The only way to reverse the motor on a KBMM125 is to reverse the motor leads, and if you fit a reversing relay to do it while running, the inhibit terminals have to be used, I1 & I2.
The polarity of the AC does not matter, although if you have the version with the on-board fuse, this should be in the Hot lead.
The reason the motor took off is probabally when you reverse the Pot leads, the slider was then at the high end, so for sure it will take off.

do you have a voltmeter to test the output of the kbmm125?
    are the fuses still good?

Hey Hoss, I replaced the fuses (not the HP fuse) can't find my VOM. I'll have to borrow one from work tomarow. I'm afraid I might have shorted the board when it hit the floor.
    Thanks
