    Resin casting project questions!

    Hello!

Thank you for taking the time to read my post!

I am in the process of trying to cast some thin detailed pieces. There are so many resins out there i was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Basically i am casting rectangular pieces. (7" X 3/4" X .06") with the detail being on the thin sides (.06"). I am planing on casting them with the thin sides running perpendicular to the ground. I was thinking i would put 3 sprue/runner holes on the top. The resin will be vacuum degassed then once poured into the mold will be vacuum cured.

    Attributes i'm looking for:
    1. Inexpensive
    2. somewhat quick cure time
    3. ability to transfer small detail
    4. Die-able or a couple color options

This is my 1st project of this kind so any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again,

    -Grant

Thanks for your response. I have checked out those manufactures and i was hoping for some specifics. Maybe someone has used one in a similar way and could give me some advice.

    Thanks,

I've used a two-part polyurethane resin I purchased on Ebay.

This stuff cures FAST. You have less than 3 minutes to mix the 2 parts and fill your mold. You can demold in about ten minutes. Total curing time is 24 hours.

It captures fine detail very well. Once cured, it can be painted, sanded, cut, drilled, milled, etc.

I don't recall the exact price, but probably in the $50 to $80 per gallon range.

Its color is yellowish-white when cured, but I'm reasonably sure that it can be dyed.

Your local hobby shop probably has this resin in stock. Too expensive in small quantities.
