    Question Renishaw OMV on Okuma???

    Hi guys,

Do any of you run Renishaw's OMV (on machine verification) software on an Okuma mill?

We got a M460-VE on order with the 200 control and are thinking about using feature with the probe set instead of purchasing a new CMM.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

On machine probing will never take the place of a CMM. It is useful for checking for tool path error, gross tolerance errors, broken tool tips etc.. We use PC dimis hooked up to the control so we can import models, and it will give a nice inspection type print out. Problem with in machine probing, it will only measure to the accuracy of the machine. CMM's are usually way more accurate than a std machine tool.

You're right -- but we're trying to check perpendicularity on a deep profile cut while the work piece is still in the machine to save back and forth time to the CMM.

Just wanted to see if anyone has experience with the OMV software. Thanks.

Never say never...I know of several Okumas that have been certified as CMM's using their own probing system. The Renishaw head is very accurate and with good probing routines, you will get good results.

The Okuma's have higher resolution encoders than many CMM's and if you option them correctly with pitch error correction and shoot them with a laser for positioning correction, you'll be amazed at what they are capable of.

They repeat like nobody's business, so even if you find some slight discrepancy between the machine and the CMM, you can typically compensate for it in order to get good results on the CMM every time. I say this because some times fixturing stresses the parts and they may check differently fixtured (clamped) in the machine than they will checking them "free" (unclamped) in the CMM.

The probe is also great for finding part Zero's automatically.

    Best regards,

    Cmm's don't use encoders

I looked at some software about a year ago. It was going to be about $20,000 to turn the mill into a cmm. It was just going to be a big hassle.

Get your distributor to prove to you that it will not choke the control. We sold it on a MB-56 and the control slowed.
