    4th axis steady rest

I am trying to figure out how to set up a steady rest on a 4th axis table. As the entire table moves around the 4th axis I am at loss as to where to mount the rest with out interfering with the spindle. The Machine is a Hass horizontal but I do not remember the model right now. The work in a 1 inch d by 7 long that will come to a sharp 8 sided point. There is a D just below that I could rest on.

if the pcs is round you could make a small fixture the length of your part with a slot in the top for the endmill clearance.

the fixure would have the taper cut in it and b a semi tight slip fit so your 4axis still spins but yet the fixture is tight enough to keep vibration out. you would have too cut it in 2 parts, unless you have a lathe you could cut the taper then slit the top.

Ive done it a few times for gun barrel fluting and it works well.

forgot to mention the fixture would be mounted in a vice at the right centerline with the 4th axis

If it’s a “steady” rest isn’t the rest stationary in relation to the work, and thus, the table? Almost sounds like you could just bolt a precision bearing to a suitable spacer (machinist’s jack, 1-2-3- block or whatever) and then secure it to the table. Or do you really want a follow rest (stationary in relation to the cutter)?

If a follow rest is really what you’re after… I’ll keep an eye on this thread to see what others say. :-)

Well the rest needs to be bolted to table that also happens to be the 4th axis. So I am trying to support a 7 inch tall 1 inch D work peace, if I clamp on the base I worry about defection at the far end. I am going to try light cuts and all that. So how to hold a long work when the only mounting place moves with the work? That I what I am trying to figure out.
